EDUCATION

James Kevin Tarrant who goes by the nickname "Jack" took a little different path to the law than most lawyers.  He actually made a living doing other things.  Jack considers his early experiences to be the formative ones of his life.  Among them were professional trumpet player, teacher (grade school and college), office manager, stock broker, ditch digger and janitor.   Jack often says that the longer one lives, the more one should do.  He feels blessed to have been able to experience life before becoming a lawyer as it has instilled an insight most lawyers never develop.   But speaking of college degrees, Jack has three. He has a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Houston, a Master of Music degree from Northwesthern University (Evanston, Illinois) and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

     In addition to the occupations discussed above, Jack now has 18 years of experience as an attorney serving the needs of clients.  Jack has worked in the court room probating wills, representing both proposed guardians and wards in guardianship cases, and handling records non-disclosures.  Jack has also represented plaintiffs all the way to jury trial in personal injury as well as contracts cases.  Furthermore, Jack has argued before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in a complicated ERISA (employee benefits) case and written appeals to the United States Supreme Court.  He was recently consulted regarding an industrial explosion that resulted in the death of two workers.  His legal advice ultimately protected a small parts supply company from being destroyed due to fingerpointing by the company that was actually responsible.

     In a non-courtroom setting, Jack has written wills, powers of attorney, various types of business contracts, real estate deeds, company formation documents such as operating agreements for LLC's and PLLC's, collection letters, and franchisee documents.  Jack knows that the the job of a lawyer is not that he knows the answer to every question but that he knows how to find the answer.  The answer might be the perfect type of contract for your need or the perfect provision for your deed.  Doing the legwork and finding the answer is the part of the job that Jack enjoys most.  

     

FAMILY

Jack is married to his college sweetheart, has two grown kids and lives in Houston, Texas.  His several hobbies include: fishing; making jewelry,  silver rings mostly; working on anything mechanical be it automobile, motorcycle, or boat; riding his motorcycle; cooking; welding, and recently he built a small forge for metal work and knifemaking.  Of course, the musician in Jack is not completely gone, and he will occasionally pick up a little musical instrument called an Occarina and play songs ranging from Bob Dylan to Ludwig van Beethoven.  He also writes music.
